Stochastics in Fluids, Summer School 2023

The summer school will take place in the Institute of Mathematics, CAS, Žitná 25, Prague 1, Czech Republic, on August 21 – 25, 2023. The aim of this summer school is to present a comprehensive series of lectures on various aspects of stochastics in all these areas and their role in mathematical analysis and numerical simulation of different types of flows. The summer school is organized as a multidisciplinary event with topics ranging from theoretical and numerical mathematics to physics and applications.
Besides of the course lectures, the program will include a one-day workshop (on Wednesday, August 23) dedicated to short, more advanced lectures given by attending scientists.

HR Excellence

The recent goal of the Institute of Mathematics is to design and implement new strategic management following the European Charter for Researchers and the Code of Conduct for the Recruitment of Researchers. The Institute received the HR Excellence in Research Award from the European Commission on October 5, 2021.

Nezkreslená věda VI: Superpočítače

Pracovníci Střediska společných činností AV ČR ve spolupráci se studiem Maur Film vyrobili krátký animovaný popularizační film nazvaný Superpočítače. Komentář namluvili Barbora Hrzánová a Radek Holub, odborným garantem byl Jakub Šístek z Matematického ústavu AV ČR. Film vyrobený v rámci programu Strategie AV21 je volně přístupný na YouTube.

Video promoting cooperation with Doosan-Bobcat EMEA in Dobříš

Institute of Mathematics prepared a promotional video presenting its cooperation with the company Doosan-Bobcat EMEA in Dobříš within Strategy AV21 on mathematical models of processes needed for the development of new compact excavators and loaders. The video is in Czech and presents successful solutions for problems concerning material fatigue, engine cooling, corresponding noise and phase transitions during windshield defrosting.

The nineteenth Eduard Čech Lecture: Yoshihiro Shibata (Waseda University, Tokyo)

Professor Yoshihiro Shibata will deliver the representative Eduard Čech Lecture on Wednesday, May 24, 2023, at 10:30 am, in the blue lecture room of the Institute of Mathematics. The lecture will be streamed live via Zoom and YouTube.
Professor Shibata is a world-renowned expert on the mathematical theory of fluid flow and the theory of initial-boundary value problems for partial differential equations of parabolic and hyperbolic type. Together with his colleagues, he came up with several fundamental results, such as the resolvent estimates for the Oseen problem, the Lp-Lq theory of the Stokes semigroup, the theory of R-boundedness for compressible fluids, and its extension to the time-period case.
The distinguished Eduard Čech Lectures are held to commemorate one of the most eminent Czech mathematicians and a founder of the Institute of Mathematics and are directed to a general mathematical audience. Professor Yoshihiro Shibata is the sixth Eduard Čech Distinguished Visitor, and the nineteenth Eduard Čech Lecture is a part of his research programme at the Institute of Mathematics.

Jiří Jarušek passed away

With deep sorrow, we announce that a prominent researcher of the Institute of Mathematics of the Czech Academy of Sciences Jiří Jarušek passed away on April 19, 2023, at the age of 72 years. His scientific career started at the Institute of Information Theory and Automation in the early eighties after a successful defence of his PhD Thesis under the supervision of Jindřich Nečas. He came to the Institute of Mathematics in 1997, and his dominant research area was the theory of contact problems in mechanics, in which he became an internationally renowned expert. His monograph, written jointly with Christof Eck and Miroslav Krbec, which was awarded the Minister of Education Prize in 2007, became a standard reference source. Jiří Jarušek had an excellent knowledge of functional and convex analysis and was always ready to help his colleagues with problems coming from a broad area of mathematics. In addition to his mathematical competencies, he was an expert in the history of ancient Egypt and, in the eighties, also an enthusiastic nature conservationist. We will miss him very much.

Professor Ivo Babuška passed away

With deep sorrow, we announce that Professor Ivo Babuška, a world-renowned mathematician and one of the founding fathers of the Institute of Mathematics of the Czech Academy of Sciences, passed away on 12 April 2023 at the age of 97.
He was born into the family of architect and builder Milan Babuška. In 1949, after studying at the Czech Technical University, he joined the Institute for Mathematics of the Czech Academy of Sciences and Arts, now the Institute of Mathematics of the Czech Academy of Sciences, where he later worked as head of the department. In 1968, under dramatic circumstances, he emigrated with his family to the U.S.A. He worked for many years at the University of Maryland, College Park, and later at the Institute for Computational Engineering and Sciences, University of Texas, Austin.
The visions of Ivo Babuška have influenced mathematics and its applications for more than half a century. He was a leading personality connecting rigorous mathematics and engineering applications. His deep mathematical thoughts have proved extremely useful in practice, and his engineering intuition has been a source of fruitful impulses for theoretical mathematics. We are losing an excellent mathematician, kind colleague and good man.

The Abel Prize 2023 to Luis A. Caffarelli

The Norwegian Academy of Science and Letters awards the Abel Prize for 2023 to Luis A. Caffarelli, University of Texas at Austin, USA, "for his seminal contributions to regularity theory for nonlinear partial differential equations including free-boundary problems and the Monge–Ampère equation". This is the very first time an Argentinian-American has been awarded the Abel Prize. Luis A. Caffarelli will receive the prize from His Majesty King Harald at the Abel Prize award ceremony in Oslo on 23 May 2023.

Olena Atlasiuk has been selected to the EMS Young Academy

It is a pleasure to announce that our colleague Dr Olena Atlasiuk has been selected to become a member of the inaugural cohort of the European Mathematical Society Young Academy (EMYA). The Institute of Mathematics CAS nominated Dr Atlasiuk as an institutional member of the European Mathematical Society. EMYA Selection Committee has chosen Dr Atlasiuk out of nominees from most European countries, specializing in all branches of mathematics. The first meeting of EMYA took place on March 6, 2023. At this meeting, the new members agreed on the founding principles and initial plans of EMYA to strengthen the role and perspective of the young generation of mathematicians in Europe. Let us keep our fingers crossed for them to manage this difficult task, and let us congratulate Dr Atlasiuk on her success.

Martin Markl received the Bernard Bolzano honorary medal

Today, on Wednesday, September 14, 2022, professor Eva Zažímalová, the president of the Czech Academy of Sciences, awarded Dr Martin Markl the Bernard Bolzano Honorary Medal for Merit in the Mathematical Sciences. The proposal to decorate Martin Markl was prepared and approved in 2020. However, due to the epidemy of covid-19, a dignity event could not be organized until today. The festive ceremony in the historical building of the Czech Academy of Sciences was attended by the highest representatives of the Czech Academy of Sciences, members of the Academy Council, directors of academic institutes and distinguished guests. Martin Markl is a world-renowned expert in algebra, geometry, topology and their applications to mathematical physics and madam president acknowledged his essential contributions. Sincere congratulations.

Pavel Pudlák received the highest honorary medal of the Czech Academy of Sciences

On Monday, July 27, 2022, the president of the Czech Academy of Sciences, professor Eva Zažímalová presented Pavel Pudlák with the honorary medal De scientia et humanitate optime meritis. Pavel Pudlák received this highest honorary award of the Czech Academy of Sciences for his tireless service to science and remarkable contributions to logic and foundations of computer science. The medal awarding ceremony in villa Lanna started with the talk of professor Samuel Buss from the University of California, San Diego, and continued with the laudation by professor Jaroslav Nešetřil from the Charles Univeristy, and reception. This special event opens the workshop Complexity Theory with a Human Face organized by Pavel Hrubeš, Michal Koucký, Navid Talebanfard, and Neil Thapen and devoted to Pavel Pudlák, who is turning 70.

In the interview Jakub is giving an idea what is a supercomputer, how it is designed and what it is used for.
